Whenever you receive income from a Dutch source and therefore pay social premiums, you are obligated to have a Dutch basic health insurance. The TU Delft offers you a range of basic and additional insurances with a high discount and excellent conditions through insurance advisor International Insurances. Please be advised by International Insurances, because it is not allowed to change your insurance for a whole year.

Are you coming to the Netherlands before the starting date of your working contract? Then we advise you to get a travel insurance. You can do this in your home country, or International Insurances can help you. You don’t have to pay for this insurance in advance, you can pay when you have arrived in the Netherlands.
Our travel insurance is more like a temporary health insurance and costs € 50,67 per person and has a fixed period of 30 days. (As of January 1st 2020 € 58,27 per person.)
Are you from Europe and have an EHIC, which is still valid and active? Then a temporary health insurance is not necessary.
Almost every person who lives and works in the Netherlands is legally obliged to have a public health insurance (basic health insurance – “basisverzekering’’).
Are you accompanied by family members?
Their public health insurance will start per the date they are registered with the municipality (when they have their BSN and residence permit). It is customary this process takes some time.
We strongly advise you to take out a travel insurance for each family member.

In the Netherlands the first one to see, when you don’t feel well is a general practitioner (GP). He/she will advise you on what to do, look for the cause and suggest treatments. You need a referral from a general practitioner for medicines, a medical test or to see a specialist in the hospital.
