TU Delft guest researchers and visitors

As an international guest researcher, for example with a scholarship from your home country or a sponsor, you can be insured with a private insurance. You can also have a private insurance when you come to the Netherlands as a visitor and don’t receive any income from the Netherlands.

You are not obliged to get the Dutch basic health insurance. Accompanying family members may have this obligation. Regarding the price and coverage, the private insurance through International Insurances has more advantages than most other insurances. The inception date of the private insurance is the date you leave for the Netherlands. The insurance is for one year and can be extended by request.

I feel sick (nausea). What do I do? Who do I call or see?

In the Netherlands the first one to see, when you don’t feel well is a general practitioner (GP). He/she will advise you on what to do, look for the cause and suggest treatments. You need a referral from a general practitioner for medicines, a medical test or to see a specialist in the hospital.
In the Netherlands, you can’t go directly to the hospital. In case of a real emergency the emergency number is 112.
Also please see the question “Who can I contact in the evening, night or weekend when the general practitioner is not available?”
